By then, its logo — with the LL in Miller in the shape of high English riding boots — was known worldwide in equestrian circles.
It was in — when horse-drawn wagons and fancy carriages still plied the streets — that Mr. Mayer Gostkovsky, as he was known when he arrived in America, had been a master harness maker in Russia. Joseph Miller began working at the shop in the mids, soon after graduating from James Monroe High School in the Bronx. Eventually, under his leadership and with the support of his brother Jack, Miller Harness expanded into a five-floor business, with factories and suppliers in England, Germany, Argentina, Japan and India.
Mayer Miller died in Although the internal combustion engine took its toll on the business, gas rationing during World War II kept it out of bankruptcy. And in the s, as it attracted more and more horse fanciers around the world with its upscale products, Miller Harness became a multimillion-dollar annual business, specializing in equestrian haute couture and offering more than 10, items for horse racing, sport riding, fox hunting, dressage and polo. While selling mainly to adherents of the English style of riding, the Millers also outfitted the cavalries of Venezuela, Colombia, Haiti and Cuba.
The likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Rockefeller family members and movie stars became customers. And, together with H. Joseph Miller was born in the Bronx on Oct. Besides his wife and his son Daniel, he is survived by another son, David, and five grandchildren.
In Miller Harness was sold to MPO Videotronics, which later sold the rights to the company name to another distributor of equestrian products. An old wooden horse used to stand outside the company store. But the store and the horse are gone. No longer do riders, who once tied their steeds outside, find their way to East 24th.

Don't be fooled by the rise in the seat, that rise is not like a hard dressage or tin ground seat, it's soft suspended under construction allows riders to mold that shape to your own shape within a few rides. He started building saddles about 40 years ago, mostly western, when he lived in western New York.
After moving to Kentucky, he started repairing a lot of old Buena Vista saddles. They are an old time Kentucky based comfort saddle, primarily used on gaited horses.
About 25 years ago he designed his own Buena Vista tree and saddle. Black saddle in second picture below. Currently he makes 4 models based on 3 trees he has made for him. All types except the Trail saddle have a ground suspended seat.
The Eli Miller Saddles are known for their fine detail work, the quality of leather, and the famous suspended ground seat. The ground suspended seat is common in English and Aussie saddles but not in Western saddles, which is mostly built on a rigid ground seat.
When done right, the suspended groud seat — not to be confused with the elevated suspended seat- creates a comfortable cradle effect which helps the rider relax and sit more deeply in the seat. The wide cantled and unusual looking Buena Vista model allows for even more of a cradle effect thru wider webbing tack points.
To make a ground suspended seat, webbing is nailed onto the saddle tree rom the cantle to the pommel in a certain way to create a cradle effect. Then a cordura layer is place over top to smooth out the webbing. Over that a layer of foam, then finally leather is tacked on top.
It makes for a very comfortable ride, with some give but without a squishy feeling. It allows for a very settled deep seat, without undue pressure on the seat bones. Eli and his son Jake build the saddles custom to the client. They also do other custom leather work such as knife and gun holsters, bags, satchels, bridles, breast collars, cruppers — basically anything with leather. Their fine leather work is as detailed and as colorful as the customers imagination.
They are located in south central Kentucky in the small Amish community of Barnett Springs. The best way to get hold of Eli or Jake for leather work or saddle making and repair is by sending a letter to:. Here is a link to a website that sells Eli Miler saddles.
