Castle was known, at least during this time, for gimmicks - the gimmick for this movie was special glasses to see the new mexico abandoned vehicle form. His uncle Plato Zorba collected ghosts. Uncle Plato apparently suffocated in a canopy bed was discovered by his housekeeper Elaine Zacharides, played by the late, great Margaret Hamilton best known as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz".
Before Uncle Plato died, he converted everything he owned into cash and hid it in the house. His attorney, Ben Rush Martin Milner knows that there is a substantial amount of money, but he doesn't know where it is. Filmed in "Illusion-O". It's not a great film and by no stretch of the imagination is this on the same level as many other films fromlike "Spartacus", "The Apartment", or even "The Bellboy, but it definitely has its place in history.

A state-of-the-art remake of the classic William Castle horror film about a family that inherits a spectacular old house from an eccentric uncle. Well, it appears my feelings are mildly similar to how they were back in Retroactively, Thirteen Ghosts excels as a B-picture, but the original ambitions were to play just as well as an A horror title back in Everyone here in the cast was somebody and the budget for the film was rather large for a film of this type. First off, the production design, make-up and effects work on this film are outstanding. At a swift 90 minutes, its absolutely worth watching for that aspect alone. Howard Berger and his team have done a doozy on these creatures in the film.
Not your traditional spectres, but full fledged monsters nonetheless, they are hulking nightmares captured on celluloid. Every one of them would make for a fine solo film of their own right. And the movie really cares about their look, performance and lore. The kills are also quite nifty and leave you begging for more as there are quite enough of them.
While we have a notable cast, the big star of the film is the damn house at the center of everything. This impressive glass laden monument is a gear shifting, nerdy delight.
Its also quite enjoyable to just to sit and admire and watch characters simply wander through it.
Say Something Nice: THIRTEEN GHOSTS (2001)
Looking at behind the scenes footage and hearing the actors discuss it, the interior was a sight to behold. There are plenty of shortcomings in the script, performances and editing of the film. Some stuff quite embarrassingly so.When occultist uncle Dr.
Plato Zorba wills a huge ramshackle house to his nephew Cyrus and his impoverished family, they are shocked to find the house is haunted. Their furnished residence comes complete with a creepy housekeeper, Elaine, plus a fortune in buried treasure and 12 horrifying ghosts.
His family soon discovers that these spirits include a wailing lady, clutching hands, a fiery skeletonan Italian chef murdering his wife and her lover in the kitchen, a hanging lady, an executioner holding a severed head, a fully grown lion with its headless tamera floating head presumably belonging to the tameras well as that of Plato Zorba himself, all held captive in the eerie house looking for an unlucky thirteenth ghost to free them. The Pilgrimess' History- Thir13en Ghosts
Zorba leaves a set of special goggles, the only way of seeing the ghosts. However, there is someone in the house who is also looking for the hidden fortune in money and is willing to kill for it.
The villain turns out to be the lawyer, Benjamen Rush. He attempts to kill Cyrus' son, Buck, using the falling bed canopy Rush had used to kill Dr. Zorba, whose ghost catches him in the act, driving the terrified Rush to his death in the bed just as Buck escapes. Rush becomes the 13th ghost, and the ghosts disappear. The next morning, Cyrus and his family count the discovered money, Buck keeps the mask used by Benjamen Rush to scare Buck's older sister, Medea, and they decide to stay, with a fortune in cash.
At the end of the film the special goggles are blown into smithereens by an unknown force, witnessed by Elaine, who gets a broom and permits herself a small enigmatic smile. As with several of his more famous productions, Castle used a gimmick to promote 13 Ghosts.
Audience members were given a choice: the "brave" ones could watch the film and see the ghosts in 3D. In the theaters most scenes were black-and-whitebut scenes involving ghosts were shown in a "process" dubbed "Illusion-O. Unlike early 3D glasses, where one eye is red and the other is cyan or blue, the Illusion-O viewer required people to look through a single color with both eyes.
Choosing to look through the red filter intensified the images of the ghosts, while the blue filter "removed" them. Howard Thompson of The New York Times called the film "a simple, old-fashioned haunted house yarn" that "would be a lot better off without this gimmick. The film was remade in with a spelled-out title, Thirteen Ghostsand was directed by Steve Beck.
Like the original, the film was distributed by Columbia Picturesexcept in the United States and Canada, where it was distributed by Warner Bros.

Ghost hunter Cyrus Kriticos and his psychic assistant Dennis Rafkin lead a team on a mission to capture a spirit called the Juggernaut.
Several men, including Cyrus, are killed while the team is able to catch the ghost. Cyrus's nephew Arthur, a widower, is informed by Cyrus's estate lawyer, Ben Moss, that he has inherited Cyrus' mansion.
Financially insecure, Arthur decides to move there with his two children, Kathy and Bobby, and their nanny, Maggie. Dennis meets the family as they tour the mansion. The residence is made entirely of glass sheets inscribed with Latin phrases, which Dennis recognizes as barrier spells. He discovers that the twelve angry ghosts he and Cyrus captured are imprisoned in the house, held captive by the spells.
As he warns Arthur, Moss unwittingly triggers a mechanism that seals the house and releases the ghosts. He dies when a set of sliding doors cut him in half. Bobby sees several of the ghosts, including the Withered Lover - his mother Jean, who had died of injuries sustained in a house fire. He is knocked unconscious and dragged away. Dennis uses a pair of spectral glasses that allow the wearer to see the supernatural realm to avoid the ghosts. The Jackal, one of the most dangerous of the twelve, attacks Kathy and Arthur but they are saved by Kalina Oretzia, a spirit liberator who is attempting to free the ghosts.
Kathy disappears, and the four adults gather in the library, where Arthur learns that Jean's ghost is also in the house. Kalina explains that the house is a machine, powered by the captive ghosts, that allows its user to see the past, present, and future.
The only way to shut it down is through the creation of a thirteenth ghost from a sacrifice of love. Arthur realizes that he must become that ghost to save his children. Armed with the spectral glasses, Arthur and Dennis enter the basement to find the children. Dennis barricades Arthur behind glass to save him and allows the Hammer and the Juggernaut to beat Dennis to death.
It is revealed that Cyrus faked his death to lure Arthur to the house; Kalina is his partner. Cyrus has orchestrated the abduction of Kathy and Bobby so that Arthur will become the thirteenth ghost, which will not stop the machine as Kalina had claimed, but trigger its activation. Cyrus kills Kalina and summons the ghosts to activate the machine. In the main hall, Arthur witnesses all twelve ghosts orbiting a clockwork device of rotating metal rings, with his children at the center.
He fights Cyrus while Maggie disrupts the machine's controls, releasing the ghosts from its power and causing the machine to go haywire. The ghosts hurl Cyrus into the moving rings, slicing him to pieces. One day, a neighbor found a real steel arrow in his parents' closet. He challenged Billy to a duel, with Billy using a toy gun.
However, his plaything was no match for the arrow, which the neighbor used to kill Billy by shooting it through the back of his head. In death, Billy is in his cowboy suit with an arrow impaled in his head.
He is holding a tomahawk axe. Losing everything in a boxing match to Larry "The Finger" Vatello, he tried to welch on his bet and escape. The mob and Larry, to whom he owed money, caught up with Gambino and cut him into several pieces, wrapping them in cellophane and dumping the corpse into the ocean.
His ghost is just his torso, trying to walk around on its hands, while his head lies nearby screaming within the cellophane. The Bound Woman was a cheerleader named Susan LeGrow, who was born privileged and had a penchant for seducing men and tossing them away.
This left a long trail of broken hearts. A pre-prom affair leads to her current boyfriend strangling her and killing the other man. He buries her body at the fifty yard line of the local football field. She was burned severely saving her family from a devastating house fire. She later dies of her wounds in the hospital. Her ghost is still in a hospital gown, carting an IV and showing severe burns on her face. Unlike the other ghosts, she is not a vengeful spirit, electing to help her family rather than show malevolence.
The Torn Prince is the ghost of Royce Clayton, who was a gifted baseball star in High School, albeit with attitude issues and a superiority complex.
He challenged a greaser, named Johnny, to a drag race but was killed as his car spun out of control and flipped over. His brakes had been cut. His body was buried in a plot of earth that overlooked the baseball diamond.
His ghost carries a baseball bat and in the background in his cube his wrecked car can be seen. Half of his body is torn to shreds from when he was dragged under the car. The Angry Princess is Dana Newman, who did not believe in her own natural beauty. Abusive boyfriends fueled her low self-esteem, which led to much unneeded plastic surgery for imagined defects.Castle was known for his gimmicks and clever marketing tactics. Audiences were given glasses with red and blue cellophane filters requiring viewers to look through a single color with both eyes, setting the glasses apart from traditional 3D glasses with one blue lense and one red.
However, overall there are minimal similarities between the two films. The remake is basically a haunted house story jacked up on steroids and drenched in blood. Beck sets the tone of his film right off the bat by revealing how ruthlessly the ghosts are captured and utilizes a nice nod to the violently swift camera work used in The Evil Dead.
Cyrus Kriticos F. The first scene also introduces us to the loveable and jocular Matthew Lillard, who plays the psychic protagonist trying to stop Cyrus. Upon his death, Cyrus leaves his home to his estranged nephew Arthur Tony Shalhoubwhose wife recently died in a house fire. Arthur, his daughter Kathy Shannon Elizabethdeath-obsessed son Bobby Alec Robertsand sassy nanny Maggie Rah Digga all accompany him to their new, albeit hellish, abode.
The special effects makeup for the twelve ghouls is morbidly distinct and intricate with application processes that could take up to five hours at a time. The dialogue and mythos around the story are far from compelling, which makes the comic relief from the supporting characters serve as a crutch to get through the entire film. The editing is also exhausting. While most haunted houses are depicted in a decrepit, gothic nature, Thirteen Ghosts challenges this stereotype by introducing audiences to a sleek, all-glass dwelling that looks like a futuristic marvel.
It took three months to design the set which consisted of more than three miles of etched glass walls and a total of 8, square feet of glass. Welders were brought in to fuse the house together using five tons of steel, and the production crew had to wear all black because of reflection challenges during filming. The design of the mansion is a key element to the script and overall Black Zodiac narrative.
This chase sequence is not an obsolete design.
